AOL launches homepage redesign

Filed under:

AOL -- our benevolent overlord -- has finally taken the wraps off its new homepage design. The new page, which was initially slated for launch on Monday, emphasizes AOL content from our sites like Engadget, Switched and DailyFinance, and also features heavy social integration. Apart from current trending topics, the page will also display activity from your AOL Lifestream if you've got an account set up.

You can also swap out the logo background image from one of the many other funky options -- or let AOL surprise you with a random one. Interestingly enough, despite the fact that the new look AOL loads up just fine in Chrome Canary, Internet Explorer 9 still shows the old design.

With Two Days Left In October, Diaspora Pushes Public Alpha To Thanksgiving

Project Diaspora. The open source Facebook-killa. You know the one. Developers got a taste of it last month. And the rest of us were supposed to get a usable alpha build this month. Well, there are only two days left in this month. So it's shouldn't be too surprising that they're pushing the consumer release again. In a post pointing out some of the progress being made today, the Diaspora team notes:

Quirky Contort, An Ingenious USB-Hub and Cable Manager

Contort is another crazy-useful looking gadget from the seemingly bottomless idea-pit at Quirky. Like all Quirky gear, it combines simplicity with a re-think of existing solutions. This particular widget is a four-port USB-hub and cable-manager.
At Quirky, they actually are working with a bottomless pit of ideas. A community of internet denizens coughs out an idea [...]

Apple sues Motorola over multitouch on its Android smartphones

Motorola-Apple lawsuit

Another day, another patent lawsuit. And this time around it's Apple suing Motorola over multitouch on nearly all its Android phones -- basically everything up to and including the Droid X. In addition to the multitouch infringement claims, there's also:

  • Object-Oriented System Locator System
  • Touch Screen Device, Method, and Graphical User Interface for Determining Commands by Applying Neuristics
  • Method and Apparatus for Displaying and Accessing Control and Status Information in a Computer System.
  • Support for Custom User-Interaction Elements in a Graphical, Event-Driven Computer System.

Needless to say, this will take a while. And, no, if Moto loses it doesn't mean your phone will be taken away -- it just means Moto will have to either change how it's doing things -- and/or pay a bucketload of money to Apple. Get the full breakdown on the suit at the source link. [Patently Apple via 9 to 5 Mac]

A Wine Idea That's Time Has Come

Sprint CEO claims WiMAX is here to stay, says Clear's LTE trials were for potential multi-mode phones

Sprint and Clearwire have characterized LTE as complimentary to WiMAX time and again, but if that doesn't allay your suspicions of turncoat tactics in the wireless data space, take it from Sprint CEO Dan Hesse's lips. "Our 4G strategy is WiMAX, full stop!" he told GigaOM, adding that LTE isn't necessarily on Sprint's roadmap. Quizzed about WiMAX partner Clearwire's LTE trials, however, he dropped a very intriguing hint about the possible shape of phones to come: "We have so much spectrum that we decided to do tests so in case we have multi-modal phones with other air interfaces, we can add LTE on top of WiMAX and run both networks," he told the publication. Dual-mode WiMAX / LTE smartphone, anyone?

VLC now available for iPhone, iPod touch

Filed under:

Last month, VLC made the jump from desktop to iPad -- and now the app has gone universal. iPhone and iPod touch users can now download the popular player from the App Store.

9to5 Mac has gone hands-on already, and the experience looks very smooth -- at least with their sub-5 minute test videos. We're curious to see how it handles larger files and high-def content.

We'll have our own hands-on report later in the day, but let us know your initial thoughts in the comments.

ITRI shows off 6-inch FlexUPD AMOLED, hybrid 2D/3D display, makes lots of promises

ITRI shows off 6-inch FlexUPD AMOLED, hybrid 2D/3D display, makes lots of promises
Hey, remember when Taiwan's ITRI said that flexible TFT-EPD displays would be ready for smartphones by 2009? Yeah, well, keep that in mind when reading about this new 6-inch flexible display the company says will be released in a line of e-readers "very soon." It's called the FlexUPD, a 1mm thick AMOLED with a 5cm folding radius, 150nits brightness, and "unbreakable" construction. ITRI is also talking up its switchable 2D/3D display that we saw earlier, able to display both types of content simultaneously and do so without the requirement of goofy glasses. That tech is called i2/3DW and is set to "revitalize the [display] industry by revolutionizing the concept of 3D viewing." You keep on believing, ITRI, we'll just keep on waiting.

Wine Enthusiast: 40% Off Eurocave Shelves

I've been unsubscribing myself from a lot of E-mail distributions of all kinds lately.  I found I wasn't acting on the offers in the E-mail yet I was spending more time than I should researching and considering the offer.  I think E-mail is an extremely effective way to keep in touch with customers.  Let us know you're still in business, let us know about significant deals, tell us a story.  But daily E-mails about "killer" deals that really aren't that compelling at all?  Unsubscribe.

Against this backdrop, I was pleased to receive a very targeted E-mail from Wine Enthusiast yesterday.  Since I bought a EuroCave a couple years ago they wanted to let me know that they were closing out the shelving that goes with the unit at 40% off.  The newer style shelves are made of beechwood (lighter) whereas the older are made of sapele (darker).  I called them right up at 800-377-3330 and they looked up the model I own to make sure the shelves were a good match.  They were and I ordered the shelves with a total of 5 minutes of interaction.  Well done!

I pass this along in case you own an older Eurocave and didn't get the E-mail for whatever reason.  Sounds like a good time to outfit your refrigerator with the perfect shelving.  Kudos to the folks at Wine Enthusiast for the useful targeted E-mail campaign.

I've been meaning to write up some thoughts on my Eurocave and on wine refrigerators in general.  I haven't gotten around to it, but if you have questions on the subject and would like to bounce some ideas off me I'm all ears: wellesleywinepress@gmail.com -or- @RobertDwyer on Twitter.

The same deal is available through Amazon.com and fulfilled by Wine Enthusiast - check it out:

Myspace announced a site redesign Wednesday as it attempts to cement its position as an entertainment niche in social networking and stem the flow of users to the exit door. The News Corp. unit is seeking to become the online destination for "social entertainment" -- a place where Gen Y'rs can share music and videos, as well as share likes and dislikes with fellow fans.
